TXU Energy and Green Mountain Energy are two well-known electricity companies in Texas. If you are shopping for electricity plans in Texas you have likely seen these companies on various comparison websites, TV commercials, or billboards.
But which one should power your home or business?
In this article, we will highlight some of the details for each energy provider including their most popular plans and what you should look out for as you compare electricity rates.
TXU Energy is owned by Vistra Corp, the largest competitive power generator in the U.S. TXU Energy — along with a few other Vistra Corp brands like Ambit Energy — account for 32% of residential market share in ERCOT (aka, Texas Power grid).
TXU Energy has been around in the industry since the Texas market became deregulated. They are known for premium customer service and experience but typically have higher rates compared to other smaller electricity companies.

Green Mountain Energy is a subsidiary of NRG. NRG owns several brands that operate in Texas — namely Reliant Energy and Cirro Energy.
Together NRG brands service more than 7 million customers in 24 states, Reliant Energy being the largest brand name.
Green Mountain Energy acts as NRG's solar and renewable energy-focused brand.

Green Mountain Energy has a more renewable energy focus than TXU Energy. But both have solar power and wind power options.
TXU has several plans that use power from renewable sources. The downside is that they have complex bill credit or time-of-use plans. In our opinion, these plans are not ideal for most people.
On the other hand, Green Mountain has simpler plan terms that still are renewable-focused.
There are only a handful of electricity providers in Texas that offer solar buyback plans. The terms and buyback rates for these plans fluctuate depending on the market and how much solar power a provider needs to meet their demand.
Make sure you compare up-to-date solar buyback plans before you decide on a plan.
Green Mountain Energy is better known for offering favorable solar buyback plans compared to TXU Energy.
Both Green Mountain Energy and TXU Energy are based in Texas. Green Mountain Energy is headquartered in Houston while TXU Energy is based in Irving.
During normal business hours, you should expect to connect to an on-shore support agent within a couple of minutes. However, when we tested the customer support times of TXU Energy vs Reliant Energy we found that TXU Energy was slightly faster.
Both Green Mountain Energy and TXU Energy will be able to provide reliable energy service for your home or business. But, don't get stuck on a name brand.
There are dozens of providers in Texas. Neither TXU nor Green Mountain are typically the lowest-priced electricity providers.
