Electrostatic filters

Washable or reusable filters
Instead of throwing the filter away every few months, washable filters can be removed, cleaned, dried and reinstalled.
The obvious advantage is that you don't have to continually buy replacements. The catch is that they need to be cleaned properly and allowed to dry completely before being put back into your HVAC system.
HEPA filters
High-efficiency particulate air, or HEPA, filters can capture at least 99.97% of airborne particles measuring 0.3 microns, according to the EPA.
That sounds like an obvious upgrade, but don't put a HEPA filter into a standard residential HVAC system unless the system was designed or professionally modified for one. True HEPA filters can create significantly more airflow resistance than many residential systems are designed to handle.
HEPA filtration is much more common in standalone air purifiers.
If you've ever gone shopping for an air filter and wondered why one costs $6 while another apparently requires a small personal loan, you've probably encountered MERV ratings.
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value.
The rating measures an air filter's ability to capture particles between 0.3 and 10 microns. Generally, the higher the MERV rating, the more effectively the filter captures smaller particles.

The EPA recommends MERV 13, or the highest-rated filter your HVAC system can accommodate, when improved particle filtration is the goal.
But this is where the biggest-number-wins strategy fails.

The EPA notes that most residential furnaces and HVAC systems can accommodate MERV 13 filters without equipment problems provided the filter is replaced frequently, but homeowners should consult their system documentation or an HVAC professional if they're unsure.
So don't automatically grab the highest MERV number on the shelf.

A filter sitting in a rarely occupied vacation home is going to have a very different life than the same filter installed in a house with two golden retrievers, three people, construction next door and an air conditioner fighting for its life through a Texas August.
That's why checking your filter is more reliable than blindly following a calendar.

Forget once? Your HVAC system probably isn't going to spontaneously combust.
Forget for six months, nine months or an amount of time you're unwilling to admit publicly? That's a different story.
