Fairfax County - Green Power Purchase

April 13, 2011

Summary

In May 2007, Fairfax County entered into a three-year contract to purchase more than 24 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of wind energy through the Virginia Energy Purchasing Governmental Association. By the end of the contract term (April 2010), wind power accounted for 10% of the general county’s annual electricity consumption (and hence, the county met their stated goal of 10% by 2010). Fairfax County does not have plans to extend or enter into another green power purchase agreement, although for certain LEED-certified buildings throughout the county, the county plans to participate in Dominion Power's Green Power program.
