Alaska Solar Incentives

Alaska Solar Incentives, Tax Credits, and Rebates

There are several incentives in Alaska that make investing in solar and renewable energy cost-effective.

Financial Benefits, Incentives, and Rebates of Installing Solar Panels in Alaska

Even though Alaska doesn't have as many pro-solar laws as many other states, people who live there can still get a few benefits from solar. We'll talk about the benefits below.

  • Residential Clean Energy Credit: The federal solar tax credit is equal to 30% of the cost of your system, which in Alaska costs an average of $4,300. This amount goes toward your income tax bill for the year you install your equipment. This is something the federal government offers, and it is one of the best benefits solar customers in the country can get.
  • Net metering: This policy lets you make more solar electricity than you need when the sun is out, like in the summer. When you use more electricity than you make, like in the winter in Alaska, you can get credits to use. This is a critical policy that all utility companies in Alaska must follow to make PV equipment more valuable.
  • Property tax exemption for renewable energy systems: The State of Alaska lets individual municipalities offer a property tax exemption that takes the value of your equipment out of your property's assessed value. This way, your taxes will stay the same even if you put in solar panels. This perk helps homeowners save the most money in Anchorage, Juneau, Homer, Fairbanks, and Sitka, which are more expensive places to live. However, it saves money for homeowners all over the state.
  • GVEA (Golden Valley Electric Association): GVEA offers solar customers the Sustainable Natural Alternative Power (SNAP) program. This gives you credit for all the energy your panels produce.
  • Alaska Power and Telephone have a rebate program called AMP-UP. This program gives customers who repurchase electric vehicle cash. Even though it's not just for solar, it can provide cashback incentives of up to $1,000.
  • Chugach Electric offers a rebate of up to $200 to customers who install an electric vehicle (EV) charger and their solar systems.
