What makes up the cost if a gallon of gas or diesel?

When you purchase gasoline or diesel fuel at the pump, the cost includes several items. 

  • Crude Oil (55%)
  • Refining (14%)
  • Distribution & Marketing (14%)
  • Taxes (17%)

The cost of crude oil includes the monthly average price of crude oil purchased by refiners. 

Refining Costs is the costs associated with refining the crude oil into usable petroleum products. This cost considers what the current market rates are. 

Distribution & Marketing includes the costs of transporting and distributing to retailers.
