In short, a carbon footprint measures your impact on the environment. Almost everything you do including your dietary choices, energy usage, and travel play a role in determining your carbon footprint.

Carbon offsets are used to remove carbon emissions to compensate for emissions made elsewhere. For example, a typical car emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, so to compensate for those emissions you would need a carbon offset of 4.6 tons.

When you purchase a carbon offset you are investing funds into a project that will remove CO2 from the atmosphere. There are many types of carbon offset projects. Planting trees is a common project because of its simplicity and low barrier to entry. Other carbon offset projects include wind farms, solar, methane capture, and nature conservation.

Not exactly. A hardwood tree can absorb as much as 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. This means it will sequester approximately 1 ton of carbon dioxide by the time it reaches 40 years old.

One ton of CO2 is a lot, but the average person in the United States produces about 15 tons of carbon per year.

The average person in the United States produces about 15 tons of carbon per year. That is significantly higher than any other country in the world.

Currently we do not have a realtime solution for tracking your trees progress online, but we are extending the functionality of the dashboard in the near future.
