Moving is stressful, but maybe you’re happier doing it all yourself. For some, moving can also be an enjoyable change where you look forward to a new place with new people. It means you can purge your current home of things you don’t need or want. We can help you decide whether to move without hiring a moving company.
If you’ve decided not to make your cross-country move with one of the best long-distance moving companies, that’s okay. You’ll need to rent a truck to move your stuff. If you also need to move a car or two, you can hitch it to the back of a rental truck or enlist some friends to help you move. All it will cost you is gas, food, and places to stay until you get to your destination. Your friends will probably also appreciate pizza on move-in day.
The easiest move to make is when you don’t need to take anything huge with you, and everything fits in your vehicle or vehicles. If you can get rid of everything before you move and only keep the essentials, your move will be easy peasy. You also won’t have enough stuff to make hiring a moving company worth it cost-wise. If you have a few bigger boxes, you might also want to get an overhead carrier to put them on top of your car while you make the drive.
Let’s say you’re moving, and you’ve rented a truck. You’ll also need to make sure you have boxes that will stand up to the move. Don’t necessarily go for free boxes because while you’ll save money there, you may end up breaking things that need to be replaced later. Getting the correct box for the right job can be the difference between success and disaster when you arrive at your new home.
You’ve probably heard of PODs or Conex containers, but really, they’re just giant metal crates where you can load your stuff and have them shipped. Maybe you’re not crazy about driving a giant rental truck stuffed with your things. This is an excellent alternative because the company will ship the container to your doorstep. All you’ll have to do is unload it within a given timeframe before the company returns to pick up the empty container.
If you have a small amount of stuff to ship, you might consider seeing if a bussing company is willing to transport it for you. It’s a relatively inexpensive way to get your property to its destination, but you might also have more restrictions on what you can or can’t send. Alternatively, you could send a few things by air cargo. It won’t be cheap, but if you have something that you can’t imagine your life without, air cargo could be a viable option.
Not everyone hires professional movers because it can be well outside of a moving budget. You can opt to rent a truck to drive on your own. If you’d rather not rent a truck, you can also purge what you have and make your move super easy. If you insist on moving your things, make sure you have the right boxes for the job. As driving a moving truck can be daunting, you can always rent a container to ship to your destination. If you have fewer things to ship or something precious to you, bussing your stuff or sending it via air cargo might also be an option.
